Donald Trump is preparing to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in Washington with a spectacle of historic proportions. The president plans to mark July 4 with a massive Independence Day celebration in the capital — a quarter millennium after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. According to U.S. media reports, organizers plan to launch 850,000 fireworks from 10 locations around Washington. The show is expected to last about 40 minutes. In recent years, the traditional Washington fireworks show usually lasted 17 to 25 minutes and included about 20,000 fireworks.

Bigger Than The Guinness Record

The current Guinness World Record for the largest fireworks display is around 810,000 fireworks, launched during a New Year’s event in the Philippines in 2016. Trump’s July 4 show is designed to beat that number.

The fireworks are being produced by Pyrotecnico, a Pennsylvania-based company. Launch sites are expected to include areas near the National Mall, the Reflecting Pool, West Potomac Park and barges on the Potomac River.

The show will also start much later than usual. Normally, Washington’s July 4 fireworks begin shortly before 9:30 p.m. This year, they are expected to start after 10:30 p.m. — possibly as late as 11 p.m.

One reason: Trump is expected to speak at 9 p.m. He has described the celebration as a giant rally, calling it a “Tribute to America.”

But the mega-celebration comes with a major problem: brutal heat. As America reaches the climax of its 250th birthday week, much of the eastern United States is sweating under a dangerous heat wave.

In Washington, D.C., the heat index could feel like more than 40 degrees Celsius. That means the real danger is not just the air temperature, but also the humidity. For visitors waiting for hours on the National Mall, the day could become a health risk.

The security rules make it even harder. Attendees are not allowed to bring coolers, lawn chairs, large bags or more than one bottle of water into the viewing zones. Organizers say there will be free water stations on the Mall.

Mayor Warns Families

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser warned that July 4 could become a “very long, hot day.” She urged people to stay hydrated and be cautious. Families with small children, she suggested, may be better off watching the fireworks on television or attending smaller neighborhood events.

That warning is unlikely to please Trump. The president wants a giant crowd for the patriotic spectacle. But the combination of heat, long waits, strict security and a late-night fireworks start could make the event exhausting for visitors.

Trump’s Patriotic Victory Lap

Trump also plans to stay highly visible during the holiday buildup.

His schedule includes a visit to the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota. Then, on July 3, he is expected at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota for another Independence Day event.

The setting is loaded with symbolism: Mount Rushmore shows the carved faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Many Trump supporters have long argued that Trump’s face should one day be added to the famous rock formation.

Critics Say Trump Hijacked July 4

For Trump, the 250th anniversary is a chance to stage patriotism on the biggest possible scale: fireworks, flags, military imagery, presidential speeches and record-breaking spectacle.

He has already promised: “We are going to host the most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all, a Tribute to America.” Critics see something else. They accuse Trump of turning a national birthday meant for all Americans into a political production centered on himself and his MAGA movement.
