President Donald Trump has unveiled a futuristic vision for America’s space warriors — and the proposed Space Force uniforms immediately triggered comparisons to some of science fiction’s most infamous villains.

Trump posted images on Truth Social showing dark gray uniforms with high collars, belts, black boots and military-style caps bearing Space Force insignia. The graphic described the “Next Generation” design as inspired by the “discipline and functionality of the Starship Trooper uniform,” modernized for the service members known as Guardians. Its color palette includes “space gray,” “midnight black,” “silver gray” and “satin black.”

The reaction online was swift. Critics compared the uniforms to officers of the Galactic Empire in “Star Wars,” while others pointed to the distinctly authoritarian aesthetic of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film “Starship Troopers.” One conservative commentator, James Lindsay, summed up the look as:

“Star Trek meets Spaceballs meets… Hugo Boss.”

Others were more enthusiastic, saying the dramatic uniforms actually made them want to join the Space Force.

Space Force Uniforms: From Star Wars to Starship Troopers

The comparison carries an unusual historical twist. “Starship Troopers” was deliberately designed as a satire of militarism and fascism. Director Paul Verhoeven has repeatedly explained that he borrowed imagery from Nazi propaganda and intentionally gave parts of the movie a fascist visual language.

That does not mean the new Space Force concept itself was directly inspired by Nazi or SS uniforms. The Trump-posted graphic specifically cites “Starship Troopers” as its inspiration, creating an indirect visual connection that critics quickly seized upon.

The Space Force has faced sci-fi comparisons before. Its delta-shaped insignia was widely likened to Starfleet’s emblem from “Star Trek,” while previous uniform designs drew comparisons to “Battlestar Galactica” and “Star Wars.”

There is also an important caveat: the Space Force already formally introduced its actual new service-dress uniform in January 2026 after years of development. It features a distinctive dark-blue jacket with diagonal buttons and is already being rolled out to Guardians. The service has not announced that Trump’s newest concept will replace it.

A serious arms race behind the jokes

Behind the uniform memes lies a much more serious story: the accelerating military competition in space.

U.S. Space Command chief Gen. Stephen Whiting has warned that China and Russia are developing systems capable of threatening American satellites. China, he said, is advancing lasers, electronic jamming, anti-satellite weapons and satellites capable of sophisticated maneuvers in orbit. Russia has also been accused by Washington of pursuing a nuclear-capable anti-satellite system. Moscow denies developing such a weapon.

Whiting has argued that American forces must increasingly think about maneuvering, defending and potentially fighting in orbit.

“The way we fight must evolve with the realities of the world we now live in,” he said earlier this year.

The Space Force is already fielding weapons for that mission. In June, it accepted an electromagnetic warfare system called Meadowlands, built by defense contractor L3Harris. The mobile ground-based system uses radio-frequency energy to disrupt satellite communications rather than physically destroying satellites.

Trump created the Space Force in 2019, making it the first new branch of the U.S. armed forces since the Air Force was established in 1947.
