Donald Trump opened America’s 250th anniversary celebration with a campaign-style speech in Washington — and with a crowd largely made up of his own supporters.
The president spoke before tens of thousands of people at the opening of the two-week Great American State Fair on the National Mall. The fair is part of the White House-backed Freedom 250 celebration around the Fourth of July and America’s 250th birthday.
The event is meant to bring all 50 states to the capital for a national celebration of patriotism, unity and American history.
Organizers promised military flyovers, concerts, exhibitions, food stands, games and civic programs along the Mall. A large Ferris wheel was also built for the event.
A Celebration With MAGA Energy
Freedom 250 CEO Keith Krach praised the project in grand terms. He said Trump had promised the greatest 250th birthday celebration in American history — and that organizers were trying to deliver exactly that.
But the celebration has already been overshadowed by setbacks, disputes and political fights.
At the center of the chaos is the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Trump turned the renovation of the famous basin into one of his prestige projects. Instead, it became an embarrassing multimillion-dollar headache.
The new coating and paint began peeling from the bottom of the pool. Then algae turned the water green. Dead ducks were reportedly seen in the basin. Trump blamed “vandals” for the damage, but he presented no public evidence. National Guard troops were deployed to watch the site.
The episode cuts into Trump’s image as a builder-president who knows how to get construction projects done.
Concert Trouble Before Trump Took Stage
Originally, the State Fair was supposed to feature a high-profile concert series.
But after musicians and bands were announced, several pulled out again. They did not want to be politically tied to Trump or used as part of a partisan spectacle. Trump then cast himself as the event’s savior.
He said that, as the opening speaker, he would draw larger crowds than Elvis Presley at his peak — and certainly more than “all those second-rate musicians” combined. That turned the opening from a broad national celebration into something closer to a Trump rally.
After flag parades, military marches, rock performances and patriotic tributes, Trump took the microphone following another roar of fighter jets overhead. He claimed America had been laughed at two years ago but was now respected around the world again. He declared victory over Iran and predicted a new era of peace across the Middle East.
Trump praised his own record in superlatives. He celebrated the closing of the border and called ICE agents “heroes.” But the speech also became divisive as he repeatedly attacked political opponents.
Great American State Fair: A Birthday Party Or Self-Show?
Criticism of Trump’s 250th anniversary plans is not fading. Opponents say he is turning what should be a celebration for all Americans into a giant act of self-promotion. Instead of uniting the country around the flag, they argue, Trump is using the anniversary to energize his MAGA base.
The accusation is sharp: Even on America’s milestone birthday, Trump is dividing the nation instead of bringing it together.
