Is there trouble inside the Trump family over the Trump Jr wedding — and a Russian oligarch? Donald Trump Jr., 48, married Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson, 39, in May during a lavish wedding celebration in the Bahamas. But what began as a glamorous Caribbean party has suddenly turned into a geopolitical controversy after reports revealed that a Putin-linked Russian oligarch helped bankroll the festivities.

And the revelations appear to have created particular discomfort for First Lady Melania Trump, 56. ProPublica reported that Umar Kremlev, 43, a Russian oligarch close to President Vladimir Putin, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward the celebration. According to records reviewed by the outlet and people familiar with the event, Kremlev covered the cost of renting a private island, paid for the fireworks display and helped with the organization of the event.

Kremlev had received Russia’s Order of Friendship from Putin shortly before the wedding. He is also president of the International Boxing Association, or IBA, which has previously received major financial backing from Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom. Trump Jr.’s spokesman did not dispute Kremlev’s financial role and described him as a “personal friend” of the president’s son. The two men reportedly bonded over boxing, hunting and outdoor activities.

Trump Jr wedding: A sensitive connection for Melania

But Kremlev’s ties to Russia are not the only reason the story has become politically sensitive. Kremlev is heavily involved with a Russian organization called Healthy Fatherland, which is run by the twin sister of his 23-year-old wife. The group is under Ukrainian sanctions over allegations that it participated in a program involving Ukrainian children taken from Russian-occupied territories and relocated under the guise of “rehabilitation.”

That connection is especially sensitive for Melania Trump. During her husband Donald Trump’s second term, the Slovenian-born former model has publicly focused on the return and reunification of Ukrainian children separated from their families during the war.

Her office moved quickly to distance her from Kremlev and the wedding finances, telling the Daily Mail that she had no relationship with him and had played no role in organizing the event or arranging its financing. President Trump and Melania did not attend the wedding celebration.

Eric Trump also distances himself

Donald Trump Jr.’s brother Eric Trump, 42, also sought distance from Kremlev. “Eric has absolutely no clue who this person is, nor has never heard his name,” a spokesman told ProPublica.

The wedding included around 50 guests, among them members of the Trump family and a noticeable group of Russian attendees. Kremlev himself was present during parts of the wedding weekend.

Trump Jr. and Bettina later confirmed Kremlev’s role after the ProPublica story was published.

“Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us,” they wrote in a statement posted to Bettina’s Instagram account, calling it an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift.” They strongly denied that the gesture carried any political meaning.

Why did Don Jr. accept the money?

That denial has not stopped questions about why a Russian oligarch close to Putin would spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on the wedding of the U.S. president’s eldest son.

Former U.S. counterintelligence officials quoted by ProPublica warned that large gifts can be used to build relationships and gain access, although there is no evidence that Kremlev acted on behalf of the Kremlin or demanded anything in return.

The financial aspect also raises an obvious question: Why did Trump Jr. need someone else to pay? Forbes has estimated his net worth at roughly $300 million, boosted in large part by crypto ventures and other investments connected to the Trump family business empire.

Kremlev’s motives remain unclear. Trump Jr. and Bettina say the answer is simple: friendship. But the combination of Kremlev’s close relationship with Putin, his links to sanctioned Russian organizations and his access to members of the president’s family ensures that the wedding gift will face continued scrutiny in Washington.
