It keeps happening — and lately, it has become harder to ignore: Donald Trump’s verbal stumbles and occasional unsteady moments. The latest scenes at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, have triggered fresh Trump Health Concerns after several awkward incidents involving the 80-year-old U.S. president. During one press appearance, Trump referred to an attack by the “Islamic Republic of Japan.” Then he mixed up the name of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was sitting next to him, with that of Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin — before quickly laughing off the mistake. And during the official arrival ceremony, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan briefly took Trump by the arm while the two men inspected an honor guard, as Trump appeared somewhat unsteady on his feet.

Of course, Trump was already the oldest president in U.S. history on the day he was sworn in — older than Joe Biden was at his own inauguration in 2021. And it is also true that, for a man of 80, the commander in chief still keeps a punishing schedule in the most stressful job in the world. Trump powers through marathon days filled with summits, press conferences, phone calls, speeches, travel and multiple global crises. Even younger politicians would likely struggle with such a brutal pace.

Trump Health Concerns Over Speech Patterns

Still, New York vascular surgeon tells America Report that signs of cognitive decline are visible. The change becomes especially noticeable, he says, when comparing Trump’s appearances today with his speeches from several years ago. “Certain speech patterns are declining,” he says. “It is clearly noticeable.” Trump’s long, meandering speeches, his sudden jumps between unrelated topics and his repeated references to the same facts, anecdotes and personal achievements have repeatedly fueled debate over whether the president is showing signs of age-related decline.

Trump appears aware of this criticism — and has tried to turn it into a strength. He describes his speaking style as “The Weave,” a kind of mental weaving in which he moves between seemingly unrelated subjects before eventually returning to his original point. He also frequently talks about his “perfect scores” on cognitive medical tests, presenting them as proof that he remains mentally sharper than his critics.

The White House argues that many media outlets are applying a double standard. Officials say former President Joe Biden, who often appeared frail, lost his way on stages and produced confusing sentences, was protected for too long by the press — while Trump is now being scrutinized for every slip, every stumble and every awkward phrase. Biden, of all people, had a very similar “Zelenskyy moment” at the 2024 NATO summit, when he introduced the Ukrainian leader onstage as “President Putin.”

White House Rejects Trump Health Concerns

The Trump administration points to routine medical examinations in which the president was declared to be in “excellent health.” According to the White House physician, Trump again achieved a full score on a cognitive test. For his supporters, that settles the matter: Trump is fit, energetic and mentally superior to his political opponents.

But the images from Ankara show that the debate will not go away. Every verbal slip, every moment of uncertainty and every wandering answer will now be watched even more closely. Trump is not just president again — he is the oldest president America has ever had. And in a second term filled with wars, crises and relentless pressure, the question is getting louder: Are Trump Health Concerns becoming a real political problem?
