Melania Trump Media Move Defies White House CNN Ban

The First Lady apparently has no interest in joining her husband’s media ban. On Friday, Donald Trump, 80, barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House. CNN was then removed Monday from its scheduled role in the television press pool covering the president. But  Melania Trump, 56, appears to be taking a very different course – seemingly a separate Melania Trump media Move . CNN White House reporter Betsy Klein said her request to cover Mrs. Trump’s activities in New York during U.N. week had been approved, including access to an event connected to the First Lady’s international agenda.

Melania Trump Media access takes another path

The contrast is striking. While CNN reporters have been denied access to the White House, the Office of the First Lady separately invited media organizations to request credentials for Melania Trump’s Tuesday event in New York.

The event brings together the 57 member nations of her “Fostering the Future Together” coalition along with leaders from the technology sector. The initiative focuses on helping children through education and technology, including artificial intelligence, while also improving online safety.

Melania’s office said she would welcome new member nations, announce new technology partnerships and present upcoming international events.

All of this is unfolding while Trump is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

Trump continues attacks on the press

Her husband, meanwhile, continued his battle with journalists on Monday. Trump defended the White House restrictions and said he was not attacking press freedom but fighting what he calls “Fake News.”

He also cited a claim that he receives 94 percent negative publicity, arguing that major news organizations overwhelmingly portray him negatively. That figure was presented by Trump as part of his defense of the media restrictions.

The confrontation escalated into a full-blown showdown between the White House and major U.S. news organizations. After CNN was removed from its television pool assignment, the other major networks involved in the rotating pool — ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News — joined CNN in suspending presidential TV pool coverage.

The networks said the public has an interest in receiving independent information about the government and objected to restricting a news organization because of its reporting.

Media outlets sue Trump administration

CNN, MS NOW and Politico also filed a joint lawsuit against the Trump administration in federal court in Washington.

They accuse the White House of violating their First Amendment press rights and Fifth Amendment due-process protections by revoking access because of their journalism.

The Trump administration argues that White House access is not an automatic constitutional right and has defended its authority to determine which journalists receive special access. The case has now become one of the most significant legal battles over White House press access in years.

Pool boycott creates awkward White House moment

Trump’s move also produced an immediate practical problem. With the television pool suspended, independent networks were no longer providing their usual shared camera and audio coverage of presidential events.

At one White House appearance connected to the inauguration of a new granite helicopter landing area, footage circulated without the normal pool audio setup — an awkward illustration of what happens when the traditional television pool system breaks down.

The television pool exists because one network normally records the president and distributes the video feed to other broadcasters, avoiding the need for every network to send a full crew into restricted spaces.

White House launches “Trump TV”

At the same time, the White House launched its own round-the-clock streaming operation. “TRUMP TV: The Essentials Station” began broadcasting as a 24/7 online channel featuring Trump speeches, administration events and other White House material. The White House officially launched the service Monday.

The promise: Trump in real time, major moments from his administration and continuous programming delivered directly through an online platform.

But the debut quickly drew attention when older presidential footage appeared during the launch rather than continuous live programming. Critics characterized the project as government-controlled media, while Trump supporters portrayed it as a way to bypass traditional news organizations they distrust.

Melania goes her own way

And in the middle of this media war, Melania Trump’s team is apparently keeping its own door open. There is no evidence that the First Lady personally overruled her husband or deliberately challenged the White House ban. Her office controls credentialing for her own events, and Tuesday’s event is taking place in New York rather than on White House grounds.

Still, the Melania Trump Media contrast could hardly be sharper.

Donald Trump has barred CNN from the White House. CNN’s Betsy Klein had her White House credential deactivated. Yet Melania Trump’s office approved media credential requests for coverage of her own New York events.
