President Donald Trump has delivered a humiliating public rebuke to Kimberly Guilfoyle, his son’s former fiancée and now-ousted U.S. ambassador to Greece, distancing himself from the longtime MAGA insider as allegations of financial misconduct engulf her diplomatic career.
The Kimberly Guilfoyle scandal erupted into a full-blown White House crisis Tuesday when Trump, 80, was asked whether he was surprised by allegations involving a woman who had almost become part of his family. The president immediately rejected the description, downplaying Guilfoyle’s years-long relationship with Donald Trump Jr. and making clear that their former personal ties would not protect her.
“No, she wasn’t a member of my family,” Trump told reporters. He then added dismissively that she had dated his son a long time ago.
The remarkably cold response came hours after the White House confirmed that Guilfoyle, 57, had been asked to resign as ambassador to Greece following weeks of damaging allegations involving her finances, personal conduct and relationships with political donors.
Trump acknowledged that Guilfoyle had performed well in Athens but said he was unhappy with the reports about her behavior. He also revealed that he had not spoken to her personally about the decision to remove her.
Trump Cuts Ties With His Son’s Former Fiancée
The president’s remarks were particularly striking given Guilfoyle’s once-prominent position inside the Trump family’s political and social circle.
A former Fox News personality and California prosecutor, Guilfoyle began dating Donald Trump Jr. in 2018, shortly after his separation from Vanessa Trump. The couple quickly became one of the most recognizable partnerships in the MAGA movement, appearing together at campaign rallies, fundraisers and Republican political events.
Trump Jr. proposed on New Year’s Eve 2020, but the wedding never happened. Their relationship ended in late 2024 after approximately six years together, and Trump Jr. subsequently began a relationship with Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson.
Guilfoyle, however, remained a prominent Trump supporter and received a prestigious diplomatic appointment as U.S. ambassador to Greece.
Now, the political relationship appears to have suffered a dramatic rupture.
The president’s blunt dismissal of her former family connections underscored the administration’s determination to distance itself from the increasingly damaging controversy.
Kimberly Guilfoyle Scandal: $100,000 Credit Card Allegations
At the center of the Kimberly Guilfoyle scandal are allegations that she sought $100,000 from Republican donor and businessman Eric Deters to cover personal American Express credit card debt before her Senate confirmation hearing.
According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal and CBS News, Deters provided messages that he says document the financial request. He alleges that Guilfoyle offered to use her political connections to help him gain access to senior Trump administration officials, including figures involved in legal and tax matters.
Deters characterized the arrangement as an attempt to exchange political influence for personal financial assistance.
Guilfoyle’s attorneys strongly dispute that account. They maintain that the financial disagreement concerns approximately $150,000 in unpaid compensation for speaking engagements and consulting work performed in 2024 and early 2025.
The allegations have not been established in court, and Guilfoyle denies wrongdoing.
Nevertheless, the disclosures prompted growing concerns among lawmakers from both parties about whether personal financial interests had improperly intersected with her diplomatic position.
Inspector General Examines Conduct in Greece
Additional reports have raised questions about Guilfoyle’s lifestyle and professional conduct during her assignment in Athens.
The Daily Mail reported allegations involving private aircraft and helicopter travel, potentially improper gifts, relationships with business interests, and complaints about her management of embassy personnel.
Other reports suggested that Guilfoyle promoted the interests of a Greek energy company without adequately addressing possible conflicts of interest.
A U.S. official told the Associated Press that the State Department’s inspector general was examining the allegations. However, it remained unclear whether a formal investigation had been opened, and the State Department declined to confirm its status publicly.
The distinction matters: An initial review of complaints does not establish misconduct, and the allegations against Guilfoyle remain disputed.
The controversy has nevertheless created diplomatic complications in Greece, where opposition politicians have demanded explanations about the American ambassador’s conduct.
White House Announces Guilfoyle’s Removal
The dramatic dismissal became the biggest headline of newly appointed White House press secretary Katie Zacharia’s first briefing Tuesday.
Zacharia, 41, confirmed that the administration had requested Guilfoyle’s resignation while offering a brief statement praising her service.
The announcement overshadowed Zacharia’s debut, which ended after approximately 14 minutes and just three questions from reporters.
Guilfoyle subsequently confirmed her departure in a statement posted on X, rejecting the accusations and promising to defend her reputation.
She thanked Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the opportunity to serve in Athens and reaffirmed her commitment to the president’s America First political movement.
Her message emphasized that leaving the administration would not end her support for Trump, despite the president’s decision to remove her.
