Trump World Cup Snub Raises Questions Before Final

Donald Trump rarely misses a big stage. But so far, he has stayed away from the biggest sports stage on earth.The president of the main World Cup host nation has not attended a single match of the tournament. Including Monday’s games, 76 matches have already been played. That has triggered a question in Washington and around the tournament: Why has Trump shown so little visible interest in the world’s most popular sports event? Is it a Trump World Cup snub?

For now, only one appearance is firmly expected: the final near New York on July 19. There, Trump is set to join FIFA President Gianni Infantino (56) in presenting the World Cup trophy to the champion.

White House Offers No Explanation

The White House has not given an official explanation for why Trump has not yet caught World Cup fever in person. One theory: Trump may be saving himself for the single biggest moment of the tournament — the final. Earlier matches may not offer enough global attention for a president who is known to prefer maximum drama and maximum cameras.

There is also speculation that Trump may want to avoid another embarrassing crowd reaction. At the NBA Finals in New York, boos were mixed into the applause when he appeared before fans.

A World Cup stadium could be even less predictable.

Trump World Cup Snub: He Praises The Tournament

Publicly, Trump has described the World Cup in glowing superlatives. He has spoken of the biggest tournament of all time, record ticket sales and massive TV ratings. In typical Trump fashion, he declared:

“Everything is a record. It’s like having a Super Bowl every day.”

He meant the final of America’s other “football.” But Trump’s real priorities often show up on Truth Social. There, he has mentioned the World Cup only six times so far.

U.S. Team Stays Out Of Politics

Trump praised the success of the U.S. national team as “great,” even though he skipped all three of its group-stage games.

The team itself has so far stayed carefully out of politics. There have been no major controversial comments from the players. Captain Christian Pulisic, however, once drew criticism from Trump opponents after appearing to imitate the “Trump dance.” Pulisic later said it was meant as harmless fun, not a political message.

Infantino Keeps Trump Close

One thing is clear: Infantino worked hard before the tournament to keep Trump close — and to reduce the risk of disruption from the Oval Office. He allowed Trump to hold the World Cup trophy. Trump joked that he wanted to keep it.

Then FIFA created a special peace prize and awarded it to Trump. Infantino has also repeatedly praised the U.S. president in warm terms. The strategy appears simple: flatter Trump, include Trump, give him symbols of prestige.

Fans Avoid Presidential Disruption

For fans, Trump’s absence from the stadiums may have one clear upside. A presidential visit would bring massive security measures, traffic restrictions and long delays around any stadium. So while Trump waits for the final spotlight, ordinary fans have so far been spared the full disruption of a presidential matchday.
