President Donald Trump says the world will soon know what is inside his mysterious Iran MOU. But for now, the text remains secret.
The memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran has become the most closely watched document in world diplomacy. Trump says it will end the Iran war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and guarantee that Tehran will not obtain a nuclear weapon. Yet the actual text has not been released.
That has created a strange political moment: the president is selling a historic peace deal before the public, Congress, U.S. allies and even some regional partners have seen the words on the page.
Trump now says he will reveal it personally.
“I’m going to read it word by word,” Trump told reporters, according to the New York Post.
He said he wants to wait for a formal setting first, with the deal expected to be officially signed Friday in Switzerland.
Iran MOU: What Is Actually In It?
The known outlines are broad. The MOU is expected to extend the ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, end the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports and launch further nuclear negotiations. Reuters reported that Trump said the memo clearly states Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.
But the crucial details remain unclear. What happens to Iran’s enriched uranium? How intrusive are inspections? What sanctions relief does Tehran receive? Are Iranian funds unfrozen? Does the deal address missiles, proxies or threats to Israel? What enforcement mechanism exists if Iran breaks the terms?
Those are not small questions. They are the whole deal. Trump has described the agreement as a breakthrough. Iranian officials have offered their own versions. Israeli leaders and other allies are watching nervously.
Unusual Secrecy
Diplomatic agreements are often negotiated behind closed doors. That part is normal.
What is unusual is the public drama around a document that Trump says is already essentially done, but that has not yet been shown. Even more unusual is the president’s promise to read the text aloud to the media. The format suggests the White House understands the trust problem. After weeks of competing claims from Washington, Tehran and foreign officials, the administration needs the actual text to settle the dispute.
When Could It Be Released?
The most likely moment is after the formal signing ceremony expected Friday in Switzerland. Trump has suggested the release could come within days. Reuters reported that he is open to sending the deal to Congress for review, a move some Republican lawmakers support.
That could matter politically. If Congress gets involved, the Iran MOU may become more than a foreign-policy document. It could become a test of Trump’s control over Republicans, his alliance with Israel and his promise that the war produced more than a temporary pause. For now, the world is left waiting.
