There’s no break for winter-weary residents as a New York Snow Storm threatens to blanket the city with several inches of snow by early Monday. Forecasters warn that a strengthening nor’easter off the Atlantic coast could snarl travel and create hazardous conditions across the five boroughs.
Meteorologists say the system has grown more organized since earlier projections. As a result, snowfall estimates have ticked higher, and confidence in measurable accumulation has increased heading into the weekend.
New York Snow Storm Forecast Shifts West
According to AccuWeather chief meteorologist Jonathan Porter, the New York Snow Storm is expected to deliver 3 to 6 inches of snow from Sunday evening into Monday morning. Wind gusts may reach 40 mph, which could reduce visibility and whip snow across untreated roads.
Forecasters now place the chance of heavier totals at around 35% if the storm intensifies and shifts slightly west. Therefore, commuters should prepare for possible delays and slick streets when the workweek begins.
Light flurries are projected to start late Sunday morning. However, daytime temperatures will likely keep most of the snow from sticking at first, leading instead to wet and slushy pavement.
Overnight Snow Could Snarl Commutes
The New York Snow Storm is forecast to peak overnight Sunday into early Monday, when temperatures fall below freezing and accumulation becomes more likely. Importantly, the heaviest snowfall could occur while most residents are asleep, increasing the risk of difficult driving conditions at daybreak.
“If you can avoid traveling Sunday night, that would be advised,” Porter said. Snow is expected to taper off around mid-morning Monday, although icy patches may linger into the afternoon.
Meanwhile, eastern Long Island may face even harsher impacts. Meteorologists warn of possible blizzard conditions there, along with snowfall totals ranging from 6 inches to a foot. Strong winds along the coast could further complicate visibility and road safety.
The approaching New York Snow Storm arrives as piles of dirty snow from previous systems have only recently begun to melt. Late January storms and earlier snowfall this week left stubborn mounds along sidewalks and curbs throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
City Sanitation Crews Already Preparing
City sanitation crews continue clearing storm drains and intersections. Nevertheless, another round of accumulation may temporarily reverse recent progress.
As the New York Snow Storm moves through, officials are urging residents to monitor local advisories and check transit updates. Although this system is not projected to reach historic levels, even moderate snowfall can disrupt buses, commuter rail and airport schedules.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to moderate later in the week. Highs could climb into the upper 40s by Thursday and Friday, promoting gradual melting of fresh and older snow alike.
Still, the largest piles may remain for weeks. Forecasters caution that while sunlight grows stronger in late February, complete melting could stretch well into March if additional systems follow.
For now, the New York Snow Storm serves as another reminder that winter still holds its grip on the Northeast. Residents are once again pulling out shovels, checking forecasts and bracing for a potentially messy start to the week.
