The Iran ceasefire is still alive. But only barely. Daily clashes continue across the Middle East. Iranian attacks, U.S. defensive strikes and the oil chaos in the Strait of Hormuz keep testing Washington’s patience. Yet President Donald Trump appears reluctant to restart the war with full force.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump has privately told advisers that he would consider ending the Iran ceasefire only if Tehran kills American troops. That red line suggests the president may be willing to tolerate smaller attacks, at least for now, while he waits for a possible deal.
Trump Redefines A Ceasefire
Trump has also tried to redefine what a ceasefire means in the Middle East. Speaking in the Oval Office, he said a ceasefire in the region can mean “shooting in a more moderate manner.” The remark captured the strange reality of the conflict: The war is officially paused, but the violence has not stopped. That was clear again after Iran fired missiles at a U.S. base in Kuwait. The attack also hit Kuwait’s international airport, causing heavy damage. One person was killed.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also played down the latest escalation. He said the U.S. would respond defensively if Iran attacked ships or American positions. That is the administration’s current line: avoid a full restart of the war, but keep military pressure in reserve.
Oil Chaos Keeps Pressure On Trump
The biggest pressure point remains oil. Iran’s blockade tactics in the Strait of Hormuz continue to disrupt shipping through the world’s most important energy artery. The result is higher fuel prices, supply anxiety and political pain in the United States.
Gasoline prices have surged sharply since the start of the war. That matters for Trump, especially with the midterm elections approaching in November. The war is already unpopular with many Americans. Some Republicans in the House recently joined Democrats in a vote aimed at limiting Trump’s Iran war powers. It was a warning shot from his own party.
Many Republicans want the conflict behind them before voters go to the polls.
The Blockade Becomes America’s Weapon
But the U.S. still has one powerful lever: its counter-blockade of Iranian ports. The blockade is hitting Iran’s imports and exports, especially oil. That brings the war directly into the economy of the regime.
Former U.S. military intelligence officer Michael Pregent told America Report that this may be the strongest pressure point Washington has.
“It is a nightmare for Tehran, because the war is being carried into the regime’s economy,” Pregent said.
He added: “The blockade is the lever to force Tehran to the negotiating table.”
That explains why Trump may be holding back. A wider air war would bring bigger risks, including American casualties. A blockade creates pain for Iran without forcing the U.S. into a full military reopening of the conflict.
Still, the strategy is risky. Iran can keep testing the ceasefire. Trump can keep absorbing smaller provocations. But one deadly strike on U.S. troops could change everything. For now, the Iran ceasefire survives because Trump wants a deal more than a restart of the war. But the region is still shooting, oil is still disrupted and Washington’s patience is not unlimited.
