The Comey indictment has thrown one of Donald Trump’s most bitter Washington feuds back into the national spotlight. Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted Tuesday over a deleted Instagram post showing seashells arranged as “86 47,” a message Trump allies described as a threat against the president, according to ABC News and Reuters.
Comey, who led the FBI before Trump fired him in 2017, has long stood as one of the president’s most visible enemies. However, this case moves the fight from political combat to criminal court. Prosecutors brought the new charges after an earlier case against Comey was dismissed over a separate legal issue involving the appointment of a prosecutor.
Comey Indictment Centers On Seashell Post
The Comey indictment focuses on a photo Comey posted last year with the caption, “Cool shell formation on my beach walk,” according to ABC News. The shells spelled out “86 47.” In American slang, “86” can mean to get rid of something, while “47” has been read as a reference to Trump as the 47th president.
Trump allies quickly accused Comey of posting a veiled threat. Comey later deleted the image and said he did not intend a call for violence. The new indictment reportedly includes two charges: threats against the president and transmitting a threat in interstate commerce. The Washington Post reported that the case was filed in North Carolina and that a court appearance had not yet been scheduled.
The Comey indictment also revives questions about how prosecutors define a threat in a political setting. Legal experts often point to a high bar in such cases, because prosecutors must show more than bad judgment, sarcasm or reckless political language. They must prove that the message crossed into a true threat.
Comey Indictment Reopens Trump Feud
The Comey indictment lands nearly nine years after Trump fired Comey during the Russia investigation. That decision triggered a political firestorm during Trump’s first term and helped turn Comey into a central figure in the president’s long-running claims about the “deep state.”
Now, the feud has entered a new phase. Supporters of Trump argue that the Justice Department had no choice but to act after a former FBI director posted a message they viewed as dangerous. Meanwhile, critics say the prosecution looks like retaliation against a longtime Trump adversary.
The Comey indictment follows a previous prosecution effort against Comey in Virginia over allegations tied to congressional testimony. That case was dismissed after a judge found a problem with the prosecutor’s appointment, Reuters reported.
Comey has denied violent intent, and his defense will likely lean heavily on that point. The central question now appears simple but explosive: Did a beach photo amount to a criminal threat, or did prosecutors stretch a political controversy into a felony case?
Either way, the Comey indictment guarantees another bruising courtroom battle involving Trump, the Justice Department and one of the most famous FBI directors in modern American history.
