After more than half a century, humanity is finally ready to return to deep space. NASA is officially targeting Wednesday, April 1, 2026, for the long-awaited Artemis 2 launch. This historic mission will send a crew of four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the moon and back, marking the first time humans have ventured beyond low-Earth orbit since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

The mission is scheduled to lift off at 6:24 p.m. EDT (2224 GMT) from the iconic Launch Pad 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crew will be propelled by the Space Launch System (SLS), the most powerful rocket ever built, which generates a staggering 8.8 million pounds of thrust at liftoff.

Artemis 2 Launch Windows and Schedule

NASA has established a two-hour launch window for the April 1 attempt, meaning the SLS could roar to life anytime between 6:24 p.m. and 8:24 p.m. EDT. If weather or technical issues prevent a Wednesday liftoff, NASA has several backup opportunities available:

  • Primary Date: Wednesday, April 1 (6:24 p.m. EDT)

  • Backup Dates: Daily opportunities from April 2 through April 6.

  • Secondary Window: A late-month opportunity is available on April 30.

Current weather forecasts for the April 1 attempt show an 80% chance of favorable conditions, with the primary concerns being potential cloud cover and high-altitude winds.

 

Meet the Artemis 2 Crew

The four-person crew represents a diverse and highly skilled team of explorers:

  1. Reid Wiseman (Commander): A veteran of the International Space Station.

  2. Victor Glover (Pilot): The first person of color to embark on a lunar mission.

  3. Christina Koch (Mission Specialist): Holder of the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman.

  4. Jeremy Hansen (Mission Specialist): A Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut, making this the first international lunar mission.

What to Expect During the 10-Day Mission

The Artemis 2 launch is just the beginning of a complex flight profile designed to test the Orion spacecraft’s life support and navigation systems in deep space:

  • Earth Orbit Phase: After liftoff, Orion will enter a high elliptical Earth orbit to test manual maneuvers and proximity operations using the spent ICPS rocket stage.

  • Lunar Flyby: A secondary burn will send the crew on a free-return trajectory around the far side of the moon, reaching a distance of thousands of miles beyond the lunar surface.

  • Splashdown: The mission will conclude with a high-speed reentry into Earth’s atmosphere and a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, where the U.S. Navy will recover the capsule.

“Artemis II is no longer just a mission but a symbol of renewed human ambition,” noted NASA leadership during a prelaunch briefing on Sunday.

As the countdown to the Artemis 2 launch enters its final 48 hours, the world is watching to see if this “new giant leap” will proceed on schedule. The mission serves as a critical stepping stone for Artemis 3, which is currently slated for mid-2027 and aims to land humans near the lunar south pole.
