Donald Trump has a new passion project: rebuilding Washington. The president wants America’s capital to look grander, cleaner and more monumental. He often points to his past as a builder and real estate developer. He also wants to cement his legacy in stone, gold and concrete.
Trump has repeatedly insisted that many of the projects are gifts from private donors. “Not one cent,” he has said, would have to come from taxpayers. But according to a New York Times review, the public cost of Trump’s construction push in Washington could add up to roughly $1.2 billion.
Eighteen Projects In Trump’s Second Term
The report says 18 projects have been launched during Trump’s second term. Some are renovations. Others are new monuments. Several have already triggered criticism over costs, delays, legal battles, ethics concerns and Trump’s taste for large-scale symbolism.
The biggest project is at the White House itself. Where the East Wing once stood, a massive construction site now sits under two cranes. Concrete is being poured into the basement of Trump’s planned mega-ballroom.
The ballroom is expected to cost about $400 million. A planned high-security bunker beneath it could cost another $400 million.
Trump says private donors are paying for the ballroom. But so far, only donor names have been released — not the amounts. For the underground protection area and new command center, $350 million was reportedly redirected from the Secret Service budget.
Reflecting Pool Turns Into Green Embarrassment
Another controversy centers on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Trump had once praised the renovation as a prestige project and reportedly imagined the famous water basin shining in patriotic blue. Instead, it became a public embarrassment.
The new coating and paint began peeling from the bottom. Then algae turned the water green. The cost jumped from $1.8 million to $16.4 million.
The cleaning contract also raised eyebrows. The company hired without competitive bidding is reportedly linked to a Trump ally. Its name: Greenwater Services.
For critics, the Reflecting Pool mess has become a symbol of Trump’s construction push: expensive, flashy and chaotic.
Gold, Fountains And A Heroes Park
Other Trump Washington Projects are also drawing attention.
The planned National Garden of American Heroes is expected to cost $40 million and feature life-size statues of 250 famous Americans.
The Kennedy Center renovation is receiving $250 million in federal money. Trump even had his name added to the cultural institution. After a court ruling, it was removed again.
Another $5.1 million is set aside to gild statues near the National Mall. Four large figures are supposed to be covered in 23.75-karat gold leaf.
Trump is also focused on fountains. Eight water features are slated for repairs, with estimated costs of $58 million.
Triumph Arch Raises New Questions
A future project is already causing controversy: Trump’s planned triumphal arch.
The monument has been compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris — only taller. About $15 million in taxpayer money has already gone into planning. An environmental review alone cost $500,000.
The total price tag is estimated at $100 million. How much of that would actually come from private donations remains unclear.
Trump sold the building wave as a privately funded effort to polish Washington ahead of America’s 250th birthday. But the emerging picture is more complicated. Even when donors help fund the monuments, taxpayers may still be left paying for security, planning, repairs, infrastructure and federal support.
