President Donald Trump’s renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has become a growing embarrassment in Washington. The Trump Reflecting Pool project was actually meant to be a high-profile symbol of renewal ahead of America’s 250th birthday celebrations. Instead, the pool has been hit by algae, peeling material, vandalism claims, arrests and now the discovery of a dead duckling in the water.

The renovation cost about $14 million, according to multiple reports. Trump had personally promoted the project and said the pool would receive a new patriotic look. The bottom was painted in a blue color that Trump described as fitting for the American flag.

But shortly after the water was refilled, the problems became visible. The pool turned green because of algae. Pieces of paint and sealant later appeared to come loose and float on the surface.

Crews have been trying to clean the water. Reports said hydrogen peroxide and other treatments were used to fight the algae. The National Park Service has said the chemical treatments were part of efforts to restore the pool. The discovery of a dead duckling added a new concern, although the cause of the animal’s death has not been confirmed.

Trump Blames Vandals

Trump has blamed vandalism for at least part of the damage. He claimed that a 250-foot cut had been made in the pool and that chemicals and algae had been dumped into the water.

Authorities have reported arrests and citations connected to incidents at the site. Former Olympic athlete David Hearn was among those charged after an incident near the pool. He has denied intentionally damaging the site and said he touched loose material that was already floating in the water.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, a former Fox News host and longtime Trump ally, warned that vandalism at the site would be prosecuted aggressively. Trump also said repair work would begin immediately.

The National Guard has been posted near the pool, adding to the political attention around a site that was supposed to serve as a patriotic showcase rather than a security problem.

For Trump, the controversy is politically sensitive because he made the project part of his broader message about restoring Washington.

The president has repeatedly promoted construction and beautification projects in the capital. The Reflecting Pool was supposed to be one of the most visible examples, located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

The Reflecting Pool dispute also comes as Trump pushes several other major changes in Washington. Aerial images have shown construction activity around the White House area, including work linked to a planned ballroom and the removal of structures from the UFC event held for Trump’s birthday.

Supporters see these projects as part of a broader effort to remake the capital before the 250th anniversary. Critics argue that the construction push has created disruption and political controversy.
