New York has a new underground mystery. Police are investigating repeated sightings of groups entering and exiting manholes across the city, fueling fears about security, infrastructure and the massive World Cup crowds expected in the region. The videos about this Mole People NYC mystery look like scenes from an urban thriller.
Men climb out of sewer openings at night. Some wear boots or waders. Others carry bags or flashlights. In one Brooklyn clip, a group appears to emerge from a manhole on McDonald Avenue in Gravesend before changing clothes and leaving in waiting vehicles. So far, officials have not announced arrests. They also have not confirmed a terror plot, sabotage plan or damage to city infrastructure. But the investigation remains active.

Police Probe The Underground Videos
The NYPD and the city Department of Environmental Protection have inspected sewer areas after the clips spread online. Officials have warned that entering the sewer system is illegal and extremely dangerous. The risks are serious: toxic gases, sudden flooding, pathogens, unstable surfaces and limited oxygen.
The Department of Environmental Protection has also checked whether the sewer system suffered damage. According to current reporting, investigators have not publicly confirmed major damage or injuries. Still, the timing has amplified concern.
The New York area will host major World Cup activity, with MetLife Stadium in New Jersey set to stage matches, including the final. Many fans are expected to stay in New York City hotels, use local transit and move through crowded public spaces. That has turned a strange local mystery into a national security question.
Social Media Fuels Alarm
Influencer Matt Wallace helped push the story into the online spotlight. In one X post, he wrote that “with World Cup only days away” there had been “repeated sightings of suspicious people coming out of manholes in NYC,” adding that many attendees would be staying in the city.
In another post, a user claimed to have received “exclusive video” from McDonald Avenue and Avenue S in Brooklyn. He wrote that about 10 unknown people appeared to open a manhole, enter it and stay underground for around two hours.
Those claims have not been independently verified by authorities as evidence of a coordinated plot. But they show how quickly the story has moved from police blotter to public fear. The central question now is simple: Who are these people, and why are they going underground?
Treasure Hunters Or Something More?
One possible explanation is old-fashioned sewer scavenging. New York’s underground network has long attracted urban explorers and treasure hunters searching for coins, jewelry, metal or other lost valuables. Past cases show that this is not new. In 2015, three men were arrested in a similar sewer-scavenging case involving searches for gold and guns.
But today’s context is different. New York’s infrastructure is under constant security scrutiny. The World Cup adds pressure. And every unexplained access point raises concerns about whether people could move through restricted underground spaces undetected. The city’s sewer network stretches thousands of miles. That makes it difficult to monitor every entry point. Heavy manhole covers can slow access, but the videos show they do not make entry impossible.
What Investigators Still Need To Answer
The investigation now faces several basic questions. Were the groups connected? Were they scavengers, urban explorers, workers, pranksters or something more serious? Did they damage infrastructure? Did they access sensitive areas? And did they map or test routes beneath the city? For now, officials appear to be treating the incidents as suspicious but not confirmed as a broader threat.
New York is known for many strange stories, but the “mole people NYC” mystery is certainly one of the stranger ones.
