In a historic moment for human exploration, NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket successfully cleared the tower at the Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. The Artemis 2 launch marks the first time in over 50 years that a crewed spacecraft has departed Earth for the moon. Battery Temperature: A “high temperature” reading on one of Orion’s Launch Abort System (LAS) batteries briefly caused a groan at the press site before being dismissed as an instrumentation error at T-23 minutes.
Ultimately, the weather cooperated beautifully, upgrading to a 90% “go” status just in time for the 6:24 p.m. EDT liftoff.
Breaking Down the “8 Million Pounds of Thrust”
The initial moments of the Artemis 2 launch were powered by the combined force of two solid rocket boosters and four RS-25 engines, creating more than 8 million pounds of thrust.

Booster Separation: Approximately two minutes into the flight, the twin solid rocket boosters—which provide 75% of the initial power—separated from the core stage.

Launch Abort Separation: One minute later, the Launch Abort System jettisoned, exposing the Orion spacecraft to the vacuum of space for the first time after the Artemis 2 launch.

ICPS Activation: Following main stage separation, the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) took over to ferry the crew into their initial Earth orbit.
