US officials detected the Fort McNair drones on a single night within the past ten days, according to three people briefed on the situation. Officials have not determined where they came from. The military is monitoring potential threats more closely because of the heightened alert level as the United States and Israel continue striking Iran. The discovery prompted immediate discussions at the White House about how to respond — and whether to relocate both cabinet secretaries before any hostile actor could act further.

Along with Hegseth and Rubio, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, departing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Attorney General Pam Bondi have all moved into military housing citing security fears. The cluster of senior officials at a single exposed location has drawn criticism from security experts, who warn that concentrating so many high-value targets together creates precisely the opportunity a hostile actor would seek to exploit. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell declined to address the sightings directly. “The department cannot comment on the secretary’s movements for security reasons, and reporting on such movements is grossly irresponsible,” he said. The State Department did not respond to requests for comment.
